After a summer of camps, pools and lots of barbecues, our Summer Miracles children got back onto airplanes, but this time with a little more hop in their step and memories that will last a lifetime. Through some tears, the Summer Miracles children kissed and hugged their new friends and future families goodbye. Most of the children have bright futures awaiting them. This summer, 66% of children have families pursuing adoption! Unfortunately, some children still need help. In July, older foster youth and prospective hosts had a fantastic time running relay races and playing flag football at an advocacy event at the beautiful Will Rogers Historic State Park. After a long day of activities, the kids and families enjoyed a picnic. In August, the Weekend Miracles kids and families were treated to a special cooking lesson with Chef Jose Melendez, Executive Chef of the award-winning West Hollywood restaurant, Boa Steakhouse. After enjoying a meal together, the children took home their own recipe books so they could put their new skills to work. Each event is followed by many conversations with social workers, kids and the event participants to try to match kids with people interested in hosting and mentoring them. In the past six years of the program, 4 of 5 participating youth have found permanent connections; 53% have achieved or are in process of achieving legal permanency and 27% are connected to a caring adult mentor. Of 65 participants who have had mentors, 49% maintained that relationship for a year or more; and 24% two years or longer. Most of these relationships continue today. Like most boys his age, Matthew also enjoys baseball, playing video games and going to the movies. Her captivating personality greets you instantly, and you'll find yourself engaged at once. Ninka describes herself as being a nice and calm young lady who likes basketball, cooking and cleaning. She is focused on accomplishing her future goals of completing school and working with people. While change doesn't come overnight, this summer offered hope. In August, the National Center to Prevent Cruelty to Children hosted a child welfare conference which engaged experts in child welfare from the United States and Russia.
